John and I are retired and live in a small retirement bungalow with large garden in the village of Doveridge which is situated in the County of Derbyshire (UK) on the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park. Within thirty minutes we can, without touching major roads, be at such renowned sites as Dovedale in the river Dove valley or Thors Cave in the river Manifold valley. We feel priviledged to be able to meander through these lovely hills and dales and to regularly sample the fare of many wonderful country inns.
I was born into a doggy household and have had an insatiable canine interest since. At the age of 7 years I was taking the weekly dog magazine instead of comics. As a youngster I took a keen interest in my uncles English Bull Terriers and spent every available minutute with them. It was through them, at the age of 12, that I had my first experience in dog showing and have been showing dogs ever since. I was able to show ''my'' Bull Terrier Josie in children's handling classes.
It was several years later that I began showing my own Whippets. In 1968 the 'Daleways' prefix was registered with the Kennel Club, breeding my first litter under the Daleways prefix in 1969.
A few years later Saluki's were added to the Daleways family link. and had much success with 'El Dorado of Starflight and Daleways' (Daemon) He had many championship and open wins including reserve best in show at Bakewell Open show out of over 2000 dogs. In latter years I have gone over to smaller breeds, owning/showing Miniature Pinschers & Tibetan Spaniels.
In 1993 we only had three old dogs, Ben, Mitzi & Gemma and decided we needed another youngster, that is when our first Papillon joined us in the shape of the effervescent Ross.
I have never done much breeding, feeling there are far too many puppies being bred and preferred to buy in from a reputable kennel. During previous years I have also shown Boxers, Pointers, German Short Haired Pointers and Italian Greyhounds as a favour, for friends with good success. Throughout all these years I have always had at least one Poodle around the house, often two... as I think Poodles are the greatest breed of dog one can own - but maybe I am biased.
Since November 1994 John and I have been heavily involved with Petsearch, which is a free register of lost and found animals, founded by the late Paula and Harry Greaves in 1990 ....this is a voluntary occupation which takes up quite a lot of our time, but hopefully helps reunite lost pets with their owners.
